The Greater Palm Springs Play Gay, Stay Gay© Poster & T-Shirt Contest

presented by the Desert Gay Tourism Guild

The Desert Gay Tourism Guild is celebrating fifty years of LGBTQ hospitality in the Greater Palm Springs area with the creation of the annual Greater Palm Springs Play Gay, Stay Gay Poster & T-Shirt Contest. Artists are invited to submit ideas that celebrate California’s LGBTQ Desert playground, and its rich history of welcoming LGBTQ visitors from all over the world to play and stay in the world-famous sun-drenched California desert oasis. The winning selection that best represents both the destination and fifty years of LGBTQ hospitality will become the official Greater Palm Springs Play Gay, Stay Gay Poster &/or T-Shirt for 2020, and be featured on merchandise and in promotions throughout the year. The artist whose artwork is chosen by the selection committee will receive $500.00, and be invited out to Palm Springs for an all-expense paid weekend during which there will be a Launch party and signing.

The History of LGBTQ Accommodations in Greater Palm Springs

The history of LGBTQ accommodations in Greater Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley is somewhat clouded, largely because most of the first hotels that eventually became known as “gay” hotels, had sort of morphed into them rather than making any sort of abrupt transition.

For sure, though, by 1970, The Desert Palms Inn in Cathedral City was openly catering to LGBTQ clientele, and it quickly found itself in the company of several other hotels - The New Lost World in Rancho Mirage, Dave’s Villa Capri in Cathedral City, and El Mirasol Villas in Palm Springs. From there the list explodes, with a variety of LGBTQ focused hotels, inns and resorts opening throughout Greater Palm Springs; making the destination into one of the world’s most well-known and widely acclaimed LGBTQ resort destinations.

Fifty years later, the Desert Gay Tourism Guild is celebrating this rich history of welcoming LGBTQ visitors with the Play Gay, Stay Gay Poster & T-Shirt Contest.
